Context
Overview
12iD is a digital identity solution that enables secure authentication and user identification through a mobile application. The product helps organizations issue, manage, and verify digital identities while providing end users with a simple and trustworthy experience.
In addition to the mobile application, I also designed the 12iD website, ensuring a consistent visual language and clear communication of the product’s purpose, functionality, and value. The work focused on translating complex security concepts into an accessible experience across both web and mobile.
Role
I worked as a UX Designer across both the mobile application and the 12iD website, responsible for interaction design, information architecture, and visual structure. I also developed the visual identity and a foundational design system to ensure consistency, scalability, and clarity across platforms.
My work included defining core user flows, designing key authentication states, and balancing usability with strict security requirements — resulting in a cohesive and trustworthy product experience.

challenge
Designing trust in a security-driven product
Digital identity and authentication solutions often involve complex processes, unfamiliar terminology, and high user expectations around safety and reliability. A key challenge was to make these flows feel understandable and reassuring — without oversimplifying the underlying security logic.
Another challenge was designing for mobile-first interactions where critical actions, such as identity verification and authentication, needed to be both fast and unambiguous.

Approach
Balancing clarity, security, and usability
The design approach focused on clarity and predictability. Each step in the authentication and identity flow was carefully structured to reduce cognitive load and guide users through the process with confidence.
Visual hierarchy, clear feedback states, and consistent interaction patterns were used to reinforce trust and help users understand what was happening at every stage — especially during sensitive actions such as verification and approval.

Outcomes & learnings
Making complex systems feel accessible
The final design resulted in a streamlined mobile experience that supported secure authentication while remaining approachable for end users. Working on 12iD reinforced the importance of clear communication in security-focused products, where trust is built through transparency, consistency, and well-timed feedback.
Designing within strict technical and security constraints also highlighted how thoughtful UX decisions can significantly improve perceived simplicity — even in highly complex systems.
